Cleaning concrete properly depends on the type of dirt, stain, or debris, but here’s a step-by-step guide for general and deeper cleaning:

1. Basic Cleaning (Dirt, Dust, Debris)

  1. Sweep or Blow Off Debris – Use a broom or leaf blower to remove loose dirt, leaves, or sand

  2. Rinse with Water – A garden hose or pressure washer (on a low setting) removes surface grime.

  3. Soap Solution (Optional) – Mix warm water with mild dish soap or a concrete cleaner. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush.

  4. Rinse Thoroughly – Make sure all soap residue is washed away to prevent streaks or slipperiness.

2. Stubborn Stains (Oil, Grease, Rust)

  1. Oil and Grease – Sprinkle cat litter or baking soda to absorb fresh spills. For older stains, use a degreaser or concrete cleaner and scrub with a stiff brush.

  2. Rust Stains – Use a concrete-safe rust remover; apply per instructions and scrub lightly.

  3. Mold or Mildew – Mix 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, scrub affected areas, and rinse well.

3. Pressure Washing

  • Pressure washers are effective but must be used carefully to avoid surface damage.

  • Use a wide spray tip and start at a low pressure (around 2,000 PSI).

  • Keep the nozzle moving to avoid gouging the concrete.

4. Sealed Concrete Maintenance

  • Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage sealers.

  • Reapply sealer every 2–3 years to protect from stains and wear.

Tips:

  • Always test cleaners on a small area first.

  • Work from the highest point downward if cleaning a driveway or sloped surface.

  • For large or stubborn stains, specialized concrete cleaners are available that are safe for stamped or colored surfaces.
