Cleaning concrete properly depends on the type of dirt, stain, or debris, but here’s a step-by-step guide for general and deeper cleaning:
1. Basic Cleaning (Dirt, Dust, Debris)
Sweep or Blow Off Debris – Use a broom or leaf blower to remove loose dirt, leaves, or sand
Rinse with Water – A garden hose or pressure washer (on a low setting) removes surface grime.
Soap Solution (Optional) – Mix warm water with mild dish soap or a concrete cleaner. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush.
Rinse Thoroughly – Make sure all soap residue is washed away to prevent streaks or slipperiness.
2. Stubborn Stains (Oil, Grease, Rust)
Oil and Grease – Sprinkle cat litter or baking soda to absorb fresh spills. For older stains, use a degreaser or concrete cleaner and scrub with a stiff brush.
Rust Stains – Use a concrete-safe rust remover; apply per instructions and scrub lightly.
Mold or Mildew – Mix 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, scrub affected areas, and rinse well.
3. Pressure Washing
Pressure washers are effective but must be used carefully to avoid surface damage.
Use a wide spray tip and start at a low pressure (around 2,000 PSI).
Keep the nozzle moving to avoid gouging the concrete.
4. Sealed Concrete Maintenance
Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage sealers.
Reapply sealer every 2–3 years to protect from stains and wear.
Tips:
Always test cleaners on a small area first.
Work from the highest point downward if cleaning a driveway or sloped surface.
For large or stubborn stains, specialized concrete cleaners are available that are safe for stamped or colored surfaces.
